The idea for Pepper Tree Place was conceived by Peggy Rau. Being involved in an out of town craft mall as an artist, Peggy decided to open a mall of her own in Bay City, Michigan, her home town. Peggy approached her friend and sister-in-law, Pat Rau, to become a partner in the venture. Between the two of them, with a lot of help from family and friends, Peggy and Pat converted a recently vacated store into Pepper Tree Place.
Pepper Tree Place opened September 15, 1995 with 35 artists. Word soon spread in the crafting world, and the store now accommodates over 100 artists.

Pat decided to retire when her husband did, and so on December 14, 2001, a party was held and we bid Pat fond farewell. Of course, lots of good food was involved, along with laughter and tears.
Peggy wanted to keep the store a partnership, and asked Peggy Putman to become co-owner. Peggy Putman became an official partner on January 1, 2002. As an artist at Pepper Tree since March, 1996, Peggy was a natural choice. She had become very involved with the store and is always a willing participant in the everyday running of Pepper Tree. All the artists at Pepper Tree welcomed Peggy with open arms as Peggy's partner. We enjoy having her as our new "boss"!

The only problem we have run into with Peggy Rau and Peggy Putman being co-owners, is the name confusion! Let's see, Peggy Rau could be "Boss # 1"... no, how about Peggy Putman could be "the new kid"...no, oh well, we'll think of something. Other than that, all is running smoothly.
Because of the nature of business with craft malls, Pepper Tree Place is an ever evolving store. As artists retire, new artists replace them, making our store a continually new experience for all who visit. Many of the artists stop in on a regular basis. We enjoy the time we spend with each other and have often had comments from our patrons that we seem to always be having a good time!

Please come and visit us anytime. The coffee pot is always on!
